Cover photograph: Image of a Townsend's big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii). Bats are considered one of the most important reservoirs of zoonotic viruses. We characterized the virome in the guano of several common northern California bat species. Both new and previously described mammalian genomes reported for other bat species were detected. Viruses from local carnivores and rodents, likely contaminating the guano, were also identified. (See related article at e01713-20.) (Copyright ũ 2021 American Society for Microbiology.
