Cover photograph: Juvenile Asian elephant (Baylor) at the Houston Zoo. Baylor was named in honor of the landmark research collaboration that exists between the Houston Zoo and Baylor College of Medicine, in an effort to reduce lethal hemorrhagic disease caused by elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV). EEHV predominantly affects juvenile elephants, while most adult elephants are latently infected. A study of T cell responses to EEHV proteins in the Houston Zoo herd has identified three potential vaccine candidates for this lethal virus. An EEHV vaccine would be important for this endangered species, both in captivity and in the wild. (See related article at e01951–17.)
