Autophagy, a critical pathway by which cells degrade and recycle intracellular materials during development and stress, is manifested during infection with many intracellular pathogens. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) counters autophagy through expression of ICP34.5. Inhibition of autophagy is critical for HSV neurovirulence in animals, but ICP34.5-mediated control of autophagy confers only a minimal growth advantage for HSV-1 in cell culture. The image shows an electron micrograph of an autophagosome that has engulfed several ICP34.5-deficient HSV-1 virus particles. Electron microscopy was performed by Darcy Gill (Washington University).
