All Rights Reserved.): The structure of the UL6 portal protein of herpes simplex virus 1 has been determined by cryoelectron microscopy to a resolution of 16Å. The 12-mer of UL6 is likely to be the oligomer that occupies a unique vertex in the capsid, forming a channel for the passage of DNA. The UL6 dodecamer (red) is shown in different orientations and magnifications. A cutaway view of the capsid is shown in blue. The UL6 is dimensionally compatible with the site created by vacating a pentamer of VP5, the major capsid protein. (See related article in November 2004: vol. 78, issue 22, page 12668.)
