Binding of the receptor leads to conformational changes in the viral capsid, resulting in viral genome release. Comparative structural analysis of three virus uncoating intermediates by cryo-electron microscopy reveals that the receptor molecule serves as a mediator, seizing the "breathing" capsid in an open expanded state so that the viral genome can exit from the cage.
