Cover photograph (Copyright © 2002, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Nuclear, nucleolar, and cytoplasmic shuttling of the γ134.5 protein of herpes simplex virus type 1 (strain F). Shown is an overlaid digital confocal image of HeLa cells transfected with a plasmid expressing the green fluorescent protein (GFP)-&gamma134.5 fusion protein. The cytoplasm exhibits the green fluorescence associated with GFP. The nucleus is stained by 4`,6`-diamidino-2-phenylindole (purple or blue). The distinct regions in the nucleus are nucleoli (pink or orange), as determined by indirect immunostaining of a nucleolar marker C23 protein.
