A C57BL/6 mouse was infected intraperitoneally with 106 PFU of the recombinant coxsackievirus rCVB3.2, and 9 days later the pancreas was examined histologically after trichrome staining. A massive mononuclear cell infiltrate was seen, along with destruction of much of the exocrine pancreas; only occasional acinar cells survived (the zymogen granules of which are stained a deep burgundy). Consistent with the known pancreatic tropism of coxsackievirus, the islets of Langerhans (lower right of photograph) were spared.
