Volume 78, no. 21, p. 11758-11765, 2004. Page 11758: Because of a misinterpretation of the published literature, five pairs of HIV genomic sequences were misidentified as epidemiologically independent (two cases of spouses; one mother-infant pair; one pair derived from the same host; and one pair including a sequence derived from the latter host). These errors do not affect the conclusions of the paper; our analysis does not require epidemiological independence, since all 21 sequence pairs were phylogenetically (and thus statistically) independent.
