Posttranscriptional components of the gene expression mechanism of rice
tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) were studied in transiently transfected
protoplasts. RTBV translates several open reading frames from a
polycistronic mRNA by leaky scanning. This mechanism is supported by the
particular sequence features of the corresponding genome region and does
not require a virus-encoded transactivator.
